My great-granny owned Wondergrove roller rink & Alexandra dance hall in Hamilton during the Great Depression.
Granny’s busiest day was Sunday – people flocked to the beach to enjoy an ice cream after church.
One day the CITY of Hamilton decided to impose a “No confections sold on Sunday” by-law.
Which meant:
1. she couldn’t sell, so her staff & their families would starve, and,
2. people couldn’t enjoy ice cream after church… which was all they had to look forward to.
So Granny Hicks decided to put fruit on top, which classified it as “Food & Beverage”, and Wondergrove continued to sell ice cream on Sundays!
Take THAT CITY of Hamilton!
And that’s why it’s called an Ice Cream Sundae!
Always think outside the “balks”!
(By-laws are for corporations, not men & women… it’s time to take our towns back HONK HONK)
